The old and the new gathered for the first time under Kwesi Appiah’s second stint as Black Stars coach with a sense that something special could be on the horizon.
The Black Stars have a busy few weeks ahead with a Nations Cup qualifier to come first against Ethiopia first on June 11th before two friendly games against the USA on June 28th and July 1st.
Kingston and Appiah were teammates with Andre at the 2008 Nations Cup and the 2010 world cup and the West Ham star feels the presence of so many ex-internationals in the backroom staff would only benefit Ghana.
“We know him, we know what he is up to and we know he is back with a lot more experience so hopefully we will get good results. We are happy to also see players who have served this country well in the backroom staff with us,” he told the media after afterward.

Ayew also hailed the quality of the new players in the said and urged them to take their chance with the Black Stars. “Today you could see there is a lot of quality. Training is different from actual games but you could see. It is not easy to be in the Ghana Black Stars but if they have the opportunity, they should grab it.”
One of the home-based players in the side Samuel Sarfo of Liberty Professionals is hoping he can take his chance. “I am delighted to be able to train with and learn from these some of the big names gathered here. As locals, we are here on merit but this is also an opportunity to learn and become better.”
Kwesi Appiah will hope the combination of old and new players will prove potent enough to get Ghana’s campaign off to a great start against Ethiopia next week.
“The goal is to be African champions in Cameroon,” Ayew said. “We can’t sit here and say we want to win the African Cup and then mess up the qualifiers. Ghana is a team that needs to win trophies. We know it is a long journey but we are working towards going to Cameroon to do something great. But before we can do great, we must get past Kenya, Sierra Leone, and Ethiopia.”
